Cambodia Love

5th September

The Siem Riep bus is scheduled for 2 pm, so we have time to spare and check out the city of Phnom Penh. We get on the tuk-tuk with our friendly guide from last night. First things first, no sightseeing is possible without breakfast at the side of the street. We visit the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda ahortly afterwards, we checkout the beautiful Khmer roofs, which are put on to many of their structures. We enjoy the palace grounds all in a quick hurried step, the atmosphere is peaceful and a great first place to see in the morning. (Once again the Lonely Planet is very very wrong about the prices, as the price has double since more than a year ago).

Next a long 14 km drive in a tuk-tuk to the "Killing Fields (Genocidal Memorial)", in here we catch a glimpse of many disturbing things, and get a bit of the history of Kampuchean (Cambodian) people, and their suffering under the Pol Pot regime which executed 3 million people. To this day they have human skulls on display, a lot of them have cracked skull fractures from the torture they have endured. The scary reality is that this only happened 30 years ago and hopefully never again. We also stumble upon a dead rat, which was not part of the museum, but who knows maybe there is still chemicals left on the ground. We didn't stay long enough to find out though as the check out time approached, so back on the tuk-tuk

Over 3 million Cambodian people were killed, these are only a few of them

We catch the bus then to Siem Riep and happily read our books for most of the trip. The roads we read were suppose to be bad in Cambodia, but once again Lonely Planet must have been doing the research in the stone ages.
Arrival in Siem Riep is safe and sound, and we check into "No Probelm Villa", a smelly place that has 10 yound men as their staff, strange but true. Angkor Wat is close.
